RICHMOND, VA
Our favorite things.
Richmond, Virginia holds such a special place in our hearts.
It’s where we met, fell in love, earned our master’s degrees, found our people, and we hope to return to our home away from home someday soon.
Here’s just a taste of our city favorites – be sure to give us a shout if you’d like more personalized recommendations, we could talk about RVA all day!
To Eat
Most of our favorite spots are in the two neighborhoods where we lived and spent our time, The Fan and Carytown.
Joe's Inn 🍝
205 N Shields Ave, Richmond, VA 23220
A Staple of The Fan, the neighborhood we lived in while in grad school. Part dive bar, part restaurant, Joe’s boasts a large menu of familiar homestyle favorites, including Greek Salad with homemade bread (Paige makes a meal off this) and one of the best lasagna’s RVA has to offer (Luke will vouch).
Chewy's Bagels 🥯
3138 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221
The best bagels in Richmond, not bad for outside of NY. It's right by the Byrd Theater and the service can be painfully slow, but if its a good bagel you’re craving, this is your best bet in RVA.
Perly's 🥞
111 E Grace St, Richmond, VA 23219
An old school Jewish Diner in the heart of downtown richmond. Great for pickles, slaw, and more traditional Jewish Diner fair.
Goatacado 🥑
1823 W Main St, Richmond, VA 23220
Perfect if you're wandering through the Fan and looking for a quick, healthy bite. Known for their salads and bowls with big portions!
Chicken Fiesta 🍗
2311 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23220
One chicken joint to rule them all. A quick serve spot reminiscent of a Boston Market (with way better food, and a fountain Pepsi), they have a wall of rotisserie birds in constant rotation, that makes for some of the best chicken in the city. Not bad for a cheesesteak either.
8 1/2 🍕
401 Strawberry St, Richmond, VA 23220
Maybe the best pizza in RVA. Think personal pies, not by the slice, but this place gets it in a way a snobby NY-er like Luke will vouch for. PSA, it take some time to cook, but it’s worth the wait.
A pro tip is to wait across the street at Scuffletown, a hidden public park behind the houses on the other side of Strawberry Street. It’s also a perfect place to enjoy your pizza and a beverage.
Shyndigz 🧁
1912 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23220
An entire restaurant dedicated to dessert! Fun for a late night sweet treat, or afternoon coffee + pick me up, Paige loves the Oatmeal Cream Pies!
Don't Look Back Triple 🎱
3306 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23230
Tacos! Billiards! Margaritas!
Paige loves this divey spot in the Scott's Addition neighborhood for a casual dinner + a drink.
Edo's Squid + Dinamo 🇮🇹
Edo: 411 N Harrison St, Richmond, VA 23220
Dinamo: 821 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23220
Edo’s is probably the closest thing RVA has to a classic NY-style Italian Restaurant. It’s no Arturo’s, but it’s a pretty good proxy south of the Mason-Dixon. Dinamo is their sister restaurant, also in RVA, but with a smaller, more casual restaurant.
Early Bird Biscuit 🐓
119 N Robinson St, Richmond, VA 23228
If you'd like a true taste of the South, be sure to plan a breakfast at Early Bird. Buttery biscuits, salty VA ham, and cold brew that sends you into orbit, this spot was a staple for Paige's grad school experience.
Kuba Kuba 🇨🇺
1601 Park Ave, Richmond, VA 23220
A surprisingly good Cuban restaurant in The Fan. Highly recommend the Cubano sandwich and the Camarones y Mejillones as an appetizer. Ask for extra bread to dip in the juices from the camarones…
Lunch & Supper 🐷
3023 W Marshall St, Richmond, VA 23230
One of the most popular spots in RVA, for good reason -- Southern Soul food, BBQ, and chicken and waffles to die for -- come here (and be prepared to wait) for lunch, brunch, or supper.
To Drink
Be sure to post up in a dive in The Fan, as well as try a few breweries and cideries in the Scott's Addition neighborhood.
Bamboo Cafe 🍸
1 S Mulberry St, Richmond, VA 23220
Luke’s favorite local watering hole where he spent many a night, decompressing and solving the world’d problems, primarily with his two closest pals from VCU, Alex and Lou.
If you're like Paige and need to catch up with Luke + the CBM's after work, order a (incredibly strong) dirty martini with a side of french fries.
Penny Lane 💂♀️
421 E Franklin St, Richmond, VA 23219
Are you a Liverpool fan? Love English culture? This bar goes ALL out. Grab a pint just steps away from our hotel block and reception venue.
Helen's 🕺
2527 W Main St, Richmond, VA 23220
A diner by day, turned dancey bar by night, Helen’s is a one of a kind Richmond establishment that you must visit once while in town.
Triple Crossing 🍺
113 S Foushee St, Richmond, VA 23220
Tasty beers and a great tap room full of games, one of our staple breweries during grad school. Stand out on the back deck, and you'll get a view of the Brandcenter building!
The Lobby Bar 👛
201 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23220
Located in the Quirk Hotel, this lobby bar is totally pink and totally cute. They go all out for Christmas, and you can even enjoy a cocktail on the rooftop if it's nice out!
The Veil 🥂
1509B Belleville St, Richmond, VA 23230
There are loads of breweries and cideries in Scott's Addition, but this may be the most unique -- beer, wine, and specializing in sours, there's a lot of everything.
